Does My Auto Insurance Cover My Rental Auto

or copy the link

Whether or not you are on a business trip or on holiday, you may possibly have heard the question that is typically asked by rental car organizations that is if you want additional insurance for your rental automobile. You could say yes and buy it out of fear or turn it down, believing that you are covered for rental car purchases. Nevertheless, the reality is that unless you appear up your recent auto insurance policy and see if you are covered, you won’t truly know and could shed out on some cost savings. It’s usually a excellent concept, then, for you to get in touch with your insurance agent to get the particulars about your policy.

Usually, there are two situations in which you are covered by car insurance for a rental car. Both of these suggestions have their pros and cons.

Getting an auto insurance policy. Some insurance companies extend their coverage to rental automobiles as properly, as long as you are taking a leisure trip, so be confident to query this to your insurance agent. But know that what ever coverage gaps that you have in your policy will extend to your rental auto, also. And if you are traveling for organization, you must have your employer pay for the insurance, considering that your vehicle insurance policy will not apply.

Possessing auto insurance protection with a credit card organization. Some credit card businesses can give you protection for automobiles that are rented by their credit cards. While coverage varies by credit card firm, the terms and conditions of your policy could alter from time-to-time. Nevertheless, insurance protection usually only covers the physical damages of the car it normally does not cover personal injuries, liability, or theft of private belongings.

Varieties of Further Auto Insurance Coverage By Rental Solutions

If you know that having further coverage fits your circumstance, then know that there are generally 4 common insurance possibilities that are given by most automobile rental organizations:

Collision Damage Waiver and Loss Damage Waiver (CDW and LDW). Pays out if you lost your rented auto due to theft, or if it’s vandalized or damaged from a collision.

Private Accident Insurance (PAI). Pays out for your medical charges due to a vehicle accident in your automobile rental.

Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI). Provides you up to $1 million in extended liability coverage.

Personal Effects Coverage (PEC). Pays out for any private belongings of yours stolen from your car rental.

Some Items To Keep In Mind With Auto Insurance

Here are some ideas to maintain in mind as you figure out whether you want to add on additional coverage to your vehicle rental:

Don’t purchase the very same coverage twice, if you have an auto insurance policy, unless you have coverage gaps.

Speak to your auto insurance agent just before deciding to buy additional auto insurance for your automobile rental.
Ask the rental car company for a copy of their insurance policies.

Evaluate company’s cost to auto insurance quotes in your area to see which one’s better.

It will likely be for around 4 days along with a normal compact vehicle/sedan. I believe my charge card could also cover rental insurance… but a fast consider the website seems like I want a PH.D to be able to obtain a reclaim from their store! Unsure yet if my very own personal vehicle insurance covers me…..

I am renting an economy car for one day through enterprise. Any idea what the average cost of rental insurance they offer is? I’ll be calling them later on. Just wondering ahead of time what I should expect to pay, on average. Thanks

My car’s in the body shop right now so they gave me a rental car. My insurance’s paying for the car rental up to March 24 however, the repair shop called and said it will take up to April 9th to get the car all fixed. Is there anyway that I can get my auto insurance to still cover the car rental during those days even though I have already reached the maximum coverage? The guy at the repair shop said I can fight it but I’m not so sure. Any helpful advice is welcome. Thanks!

I have never rented a car before. I have liability ins for my car and wasnt sure if you had to have full coverage for both the rental car and the other car damaged to be covered. Basically do i need to get rental ins through the car rental company?

My domestic partner is a “listed driver” on my auto insurance. When he rents a vehicle, does my policy cover that vehicle without having to buy insurance from the rental agency? (which is sometimes three to four times the cost of renting the vehicle.)

I called my agent and he said that agency coverage was not necessary. That phone call would not stand up in court however. I just wanted a second opinion. Thanks
    I have Allstate Insurance.

I’m interested in starting a car rental company. The business model is fairly high risk, and I’m having trouble finding a company that will provide auto insurance. The company will be located in Orlando, FL. If you know of any resources I can look into please let me know. I have contacted GMAC and all the major companies like Statefarm, Nationwide, etc.
Thanks so much! Good information and advice. I really appreciate it.

I have credit cards which say they cover me for rental car insurance when I use the card to make the full payment for the rental. How does that work? Are there any catches? Does it make sense for me to get the additional insurance from the rental agency (like Avis)? If I am in an accident, will the Credit Card insurance cover everything or will it also be charged to my regular car insurance company?

When renting a vehicle do I need to buy insurance? I don’t have my own auto insurance since I don’t currently own a car. However my mastercard issued through my bank covers rental vehicles when I use it. So do I still need to purchase more additional insurance to be sure Im fully covered. I have never had an accident in my life but there is always the 1st time. Thanks for all honest answers

My car was involved in an Auto Collision. There is moderate damage to the front bumper, side lights, left fender, & driver door. Possibly some damage underneath?

Just trying to plan, I’m thinking the damage could be repaired in about 2 weeks, any experts out there got any better ideas?

I have a rental car and noticed one day after I got out of work, I came to my car to see that someone hit the side of my door. It is not bad at all, but a small/decent sized scrape. I have full coverage with my auto insurance who is covering for the rental car… will they cover this or what will happen? I live in NH and the rental is with Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be renting a car. Since the insurance from rental companies is so expensive, I’m planning to get my own liability insurance and use it with the rental vehicle… can I do that? I do not own a car!
Also, what is the best insurance company for me, I’m 23/male/texas with a clean record.

I am renting a car for one month from Hertz. Their insurance is very expensive (at $25 per day, it adds $900 to my costs). I have already asked my credit card company if they offer auto insurance for a rental car. Do you have any suggestions on other options for inusuring a rental car for one month?

I plan on taking a week long vacation soon (in Arizona) and plan to rent a car. Is it a good idea to buy the collision damage waivers (adding about $20-$25) per day the cost of a car rental. I do have auto insurance that could cover me if there was damage, but that of course involves a claim against my insurance potentially increasing my rates. Any suggestions or advice?

I often rent cars and end up paying insurance. My credit card covers collision damage waiver (CDW) but not liability, which is required by law in states like California. Is there a policy I can get from an auto insurance company that will give me liability for a good price? I’m tired of paying $10/day for something I never end up using.

  26. Shannon March 25, 2013 at 3:57 pm #

A uhaul truck smashed into my parked car at a local storage facility(private property), and the driver did not stop. Luckily the event was captured on camera. It has now been over 2 weeks since this happened and I have been without safe transportation. My question is if uhaul’s insurance company is responsible for renting or reimbursing a rental vehicle while their investigation takes place. I have been told this could take up to 30 days.

At this time, I do not own a vehicle, but frequently drive other relatives’ cars to get back and forth to wok and school. Is there a type of insurance I can get that will cover me no matter what car I drive, including rental cars? I live in Wisconsin and it’s illegal to drive without insurance, so I’m looking for a way to drive legally until I can buy my own car.

I need a rental car and my mom will rent it but they said an under 18 year old can’t drive it by yourself. If I drive it with some friends and get it in a wreck will it be covered by insurance (rental, our insurance does not cover rental cars). Also if I get pulled over by a police officer is it legal for me to drive? Thanks.

I have a car and have taken Auto insurance for it.
Now my question is if i take a rental car, then my auto insurance policy for my car covers it or i need to take separate insurance for the rental car? When i took the auto insurance policy, they have taken my car details and its present in the insurance card also.
If i need to take insurance for rental car, what type of insurance do i need to take excluding my auto insurance policy coverage that applies to all cars?
Also if i am driving someone else car, will my insurance cover if there is any accident i have made?

  33. Roscoe March 27, 2013 at 7:52 am #

I have a auto insurance for my car which includes third-party/liability cover. I did not opt for rental car protection.

I am going to rent a car. I will take the collision damage insurance from the counter. My question is, the third-party liability cover I have for my personal insurance will cover my rental car as well.

Or if I rephrase my question, the liability insurance is specific for a car or is it specific to a driver no matter which car he is driving.

BC only has one choice of auto insurance, ICBC (gov’t run). And ICBC is not flexible and so expensive. I have a car insurance from ICBC on my car, but they told me that when my boyfriend who has an international driver’s license cannot drive my car under my insurance.

I thought about renting a car so he can be insured and drive. But ICBC’s rental car insurance does not cover non BC residents either.

So how people who visit BC from other countries travel and be insured to drive a car???

Any information will be much appreciated. Thanks!
Yes, he has a driver’s license from his home country which lets him drive anywhere in EU and also the international one that you can get it from AAA or CAA in north america.

The insurance broker who I bought my policy was the worst person I ever met in my life. She told me a lot of wrong information about my policy, never explained me the monthly payment option and so on. I wish I bought a policy from you, Fred C!

So my auto insurance actually covers my car and my boyfriend when he drives my car occasionally (the broker told me if he does, ICBC will not cover any accidents). I am very happy to find the correct information.

He is just staying here for few months and not a BC resident, which means he cannot switch to a BC license.

Thank you so much for your answer!

I need general information concerning auto insurance complanies that pay claims directly to the driver. They want me to absorb all costs (repairs, rental, etc.) and then they will issue me a “reimbursement” check. I don’t want reimbursed for something that their insured driver did to me! I just want them to cover all costs associated with the claim! What, if any, legal action can I take to have the matter proceed in my favor?

I bought car insurance from AIG on-line; the policy does not state that I am or am not covered when renting a car. I live in Texas. The policy I have does note various ‘endorsements’ related to Texas. When I call the help desk at AIG and ask if I am covered, they cannot tell me. Does the Texas Auto Insurance endorsements require that my insurance go with me when renting a car? If I am also driving someone else’s car, what coverage would go with me as part of standard Texas policy? I have Liability, Uninsured/underinsured, coverage for damage to my auto (other than collision/collision). When I rent a car from say Enterprise, if my own insurance is in force, what extra coverage should I get so I do not have to pay a thing if their car gets scratched or dented? thank you…..frustrated in Texas.

Next week, I’ll be switching to another auto insurance. My previous limits with another company were:

-minimum MD state 20/40/15 for Bodily Injury, Uninsured Motorist, and property damage
    -PIP $2500
-250/500 for Comprehensive/Collision, had road service, towing, and rental.
I don’t have many assets. I’m a renter and I live from paycheck to paycheck. I have no accidents, no tickets, and no violations for the last 8 years. I’m a cautious driver. I drive a 2003 Honda Civic.
The new insurance company is offering me $759/year for the limits 100/300/100 Bodily Injury Liability and matching for Uninsured Motorist + Property Damage, 250/500 for Comp/Coll, road service, towing, and rentals, PIP 2500.
I’ve seen different answers that say 100/300/100 would be better for those who own a house and have a better income.
What do you think is a recommended coverage going?

I’ve heard that getting insurance when you rent a car is pointless because your regular auto insurance will cover you, because insurance covers the driver and not the car. If we were to get the car insurance for the rental car, it would add an extra $250. Obviously our regular insurance has to cover us, or else the car rental place wouldn’t make this insurance optional. Am i right? Should we consider getting the insurance?

For the auto insurance student discount I am required to be a full time student with a 3.00 or above. This semester I took 14 units, but the last 5 units are of a class that is “incomplete”. On my transcript it will show the grade for the other classes as A’s and the last 5 unit class as an I.

Would this have an adverse effect on my auto insurance policy? I am still a full time student with above a 3.00, but I had the grade for the class as incomplete instead of finishing it.

I know that my coverage will only replace the parts to stock. Also, I’m planning on the following: CAI, headers & exhaust, short shifter, big breaks, ECU programing. When my shocks are due to be replaced i’ll probably take the opportunity to ride lower.

I currently have an auto insurance policy based on working only 1 mile from home. I am relocating to an apartment which will be 20 miles from work. I don’t plan to be there for more than a year so I don’t want to update my policy info just yet (continuing to use the address after I leave will not be a problem so I’m not planning to switch any of my personal/financial info to the new address), however, I would like to get a renters insurance policy. Now I know that if I use the same company for both, my auto policy will get updated with the new address. What I’d like to know is, if I use a completely different company for the renters policy, will that info somehow get back to my auto company?

10pts to best answer. Question about auto insurance policies?

I just earned my drivers liscence. My father is dreading the cost of adding another driver to the family auto insurance policy. What are some discounts that many insurance companies offer that might help save my dad some money when the premium is due?

I just had some of my precious items stolen from my car that was parked in the driveway. I have asked people and they claim i should contact my home insurance to compensate for the damages rather than my auto insurance policy. If i should contact my home insurance, what should i say in my claim? What are your opinions, suggestions?

How does being ‘second named insured’ differ from being listed as a ‘driver’ under someones auto insurance policy? For example say my boyfriend is listed as a ‘driver’ in my policy but his SNI status is ‘no’ does it mean he is covered? And if he is covered how would being an SNI differ?

insurance online payment, My auto insurance policy period was 11/11/12 to 11/11/13 then I called the insurance company on 12/05/2012 the representative asked you want to stay with us I said yes and she re-instated my policy It is showing that my policy renewed on 11/11/12 and then was cancelled for non-payment on 01/28/13. The policy which I paid my bill on 02/05/2013 $267.00 transaction was completed I assumed my policy was renewed and I went overseas from 12/16/2012 to 12/31/2012 then came back and did not check my online account so they mentioned we did not receive another payment until 02/05/13. This was after the cancellation date. I think they made a mistake and then did not want to fix it, can I take any legal action?

I’m switching auto insurance companies next month, and rather than cancelling my current policy, I would just like to not automatically renew it. Is this the same as a cancellation? I would be using the entire term of my current insurance policy, and the new policy would kick in seamlessly.

If it helps, I live in NJ.
Thanks for the quick responses. To be more clear, I do not plan on lapsing on my insurance at all, and will definitely have proof that I was and am covered. I just need to know that I have a leg to stand on if they try hitting me with a cancellation fee.

I am the sole owner of an S Corporation and I am about to purchase a used vehicle that will be owned by my Corp. The vehicle wont be used for anything more than going to the store to buy paperclips due to the nature of my business. Can I include this on my normal personal auto insurance policy? Or am I required to take out a policy solely for my corporation?

I was in a car accident about 1 1/2 months after I got my new health insurance coverage. I didn’t have personal injury protection on my auto insurance policy so i’m billing my health insurance for the costs.

Anyways they just sent me a letter saying that the services occurred within the waiting period of the policy therefore this claim is pending for receipt of physicians report.

What does all this mean? Can they deny the coverage?

  77. Robin April 7, 2013 at 8:16 pm #

I just received my auto insurance policy in the mail and the premium is almost $200/year more than what the agent quoted me! My husband’s premium for his vehicle was exactly the same as what was quoted. Is this normal and what should I do? I’ve already emailed the agent asking why the huge difference but am still waiting on a response.

I am covered under my parents’ insurance policy (Ontario), but am planning to move out on my own. I do not own a car but I want to maintain coverage so that I have a good rating when I do decide to get one, and for the rare time I borrow their car. Can I stay on their policy even though I live elsewhere?

I was out of a job for awhile and my family was paying my car insurance. Then they suddenly stopped. I had to leave my job before my auto insurance policy was up. So my insurance got cancelled for non-payment. Now I’m thinking of having a car again and I know there are penalties for people with cancelled insurance. Is there any way I can get out of having to pay an entire year policy up front? I just can’t afford that right now.

I have an auto insurance policy with my spouse. He was in an accident and filed a claim. He is not planning to buy another car and is going to use public transport. If I drop him from my policy, will my rates still go up because of his claim even though I was not involved in the accident? If I go with a different insurance company only for myself, will they also quote higher rates because of the claim?

  82. Celsa April 9, 2013 at 6:37 am #

I plan on canceling my current auto insurance policy in 6 months after my car is payed off which is two months after it automatically renews itself. I am doing this so that I can get a whole new quote which is a lot lower than I pay now but what will the repercussions be because of it or will nothing bad come of it.

I have insurance with Progressive btw, just thought I’d throw that in.

I am the victim in a collision and the driver at fault has insurance. In TN, all auto insurance policy holders have a minimum bodily injury coverage of claims up to $25,000 per individual and $50,000 per accident. My medical bills are getting very high, so my question is: Can I claim up to the $50,000 limit because I was the only victim, or is my limit $25,000?

This year I renewed my Annual Met-Life Auto Insurance policy and noticed it had gone higher by around $150. I called them and they said everyone’s auto insurance insured with Met-Life went higher in Massachusetts. I was wondering if anybody else’s truly went higher or they are just saying this to me. If anyone else did go higher please let me know, and by how much? Thanks in advance!

I am renting with a couple friends in a house. And I just bundled renter’s insurance with my auto insurance policy. They told me to take pictures of everything that is mine and would ever be put in my vehicle for State Farm and upload it on an online cloud site.

Do you think this is a waste of money or a good thing to have?

My auto insurance policy with The Hartford is up for renewal on February 22. I spoke to a local Nationwide agent, who gave me a significantly lower quote ($150 less per year) for better coverage. Do I need to inform The Hartford in writing that I won’t be renewing my policy, or would a phone call be better?

Can you resume your auto insurance policy one it was canceled? ok it was canceled 5 months ago I wasn’t using the car so I didn’t need insurance at a moment. Now I am planning on using the car again. Can I just call them and ask them to send me a monthly fee and get insurance resumed or do I need to go to insurance place and talk to Insurance sales agent and pay $200 finders fee again? I don’t want to pay those fees again. Is there a way to resume my insurance without those extra fees. I am a California resident.

My Auto insurance policy was cancelled for non payment, and withing the time of cancellatio, I had an accident. originally, my insurance copmany wanted me to come in and reinstate the policy but as soon as they find out that a case was taken out under my name, they refuned me the reinstatement money back and a few days later, they sent me another letter requesting for payment owed before the policy was cancelled. my questions is, should I sent them another payment or not. since they cancelled my policy and refused to cover the accident cost, I don’t think I should send them any more money, should I? thank you so much for your help.

I am shopping around for auto insurance and I was told by one insurer
that because my 18 and 19 year old kids are students, I am liable if they have any accidents even though the kids have their cars titled in their names and have their own auto insurance policies. She told me that this is true until they are 23. Is this true? It doesn’t make any sense to me.

I have an auto insurance for the past 6 months with a company in USA, My policy is going to expire in a few days. After checking the new renewed quote, I see a 10 $ increase. When i called the agent, He said, we have removed the new user discount from your account and said that it is wise to continue with the same policy number to upgrade to gold and platinum status. My question is, what happens if you keep switching auto insurance every 6 months. If i re-quote with the same Insurance agent, I get a lesser quote. Does it affect your credit history? Please give me more information. Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

While at college I surrendered the plates for my ’09 Honda to avoid unnecessary insurance expenses as I was on my own policy. I am now home for the summer and would like to reinstate the registration. My question is; since my car will now be insured on my father’s auto insurance policy, will I need to include him as a co-registrant when I submit my application at the DMV?

When I registered the car previously it was at the time of purchase from the dealer, and I had my own auto insurance policy independent from my father – this is the reason I am not sure what to do.

A week ago I was in an accident. The guy ran a red light and hit me. His car had minor damage, mine had to be towed and I havn’t seen it since. His insurance (state farm) says he will not answer his phone and until they speak to him they can do nothing. My insurance (geico) says the only thing they can do for me is to file it against my insurance, pay my $1000 deductible and hope one day to get it back. I have been without a car for a week now, been to the doctor twice, and can’t get a rental car much less mine fixed until they speak to their customer. I’ve never been in an accident or even filed any type of claim before but this just doesn’t seem right or fair. Any advice you can offer is appreciated.

Side note— my car is brand new with almost 10,000 miles on it.

I don’t own a car because I just sold mine.
However, I am on my mom’s auto insurance policy as a driver and it’s a good policy.
    I’m renting a car tomorrow.
Will I have to purchase a liability insurance because it’s someone else’s policy?

  113. Rima June 9, 2013 at 8:20 am #

When auto insurance companies check your credit (or “insurance score”) before pricing your auto insurance policy (and they all do this), they are required by law to tell you that they did so.

I’ve recently asked for quotes from a ton of different insurance companies, but only a few bothered to send a letter saying that they checked my credit report / insurance score.

Do I have legal grounds to (successfully) sue the others? What would be my chances of winning, and how much could I sue them for? Would small claims court be the best venue? (I’m in Texas).

  114. Mollie June 15, 2013 at 3:02 pm #

I’m going to rent a car for two months and half, and the rental company is gonna charge me 1000 on liability insurance. So i’m thinking to get one from Geico or progressive.

    – How much it will cost per month? (approximately)
    – I don’t own a car so I don’t have any auto insurance to cover it
    – I got the collision and damage waiver covered, now I just need liability insurance.

I know there are some insurance that is offered as benefits by your employer such as medical insurance and Dental insurance. By how do you get insurance such as car insurance, Home owners insurance. By the way what is home owners insurance. I might go to become a nurse I know a doctor definitely needs it but how do you get malpractice insurance. What is auto insurance? What are the other different kinds of insurance out there that is necessary to make a living with out in this world. How do you get some of these insurance too. I know medical insurance covers like doctor visits and hospital stays. Dental insurance covers Dentist appointments. Car insurance is suppose to cover if you get into an accident and I believe if your at fault of it your insurance goes way up and what I mean is it is more money you have to pay them. How would you get car insurance. What is home owners insurance, and Auto insurance. What is Life insurance. I know it is usually offered by your employee.
Sorry I do not know 100% sure if auto insurance is the same as car insurance

I called my auto insurance company on more than one occasion when renting a vehicle from a local leasing company in Maryland. I was told by the representatives after pulling up my policy that I would have the same coverage while I was driving the rental vehicle as if I were in my personal vehicle. I later had someone file a damage and injury claim against my insurance company and the claims specialist says that they may have to investigate my coverage because I may only be covered for damages and liability if my personal vehicle is inoperable. This was not made clear when I phoned in to the company or I would have never opted to use my own coverage. Is there any recourse in the state of Maryland for a situation like this If my insurance company hangs me out to dry?

I was hit by a car from behind and police report is in favor of me. Other party has same insurance. My agent has not made any effort (almost 4 months) to represent our case in spite of police report and evidences we provided. He interviewed us on the phone. His transcript of my interview is missing key words. Guess he has transferred the same to his colleague who is representing the other party and declined responsibility. My agent wants me to accept payments from my insurance which will not cover deductible, car rental and full medical expenses. Should I complain against my agent or directly go to a lawyer?

Let’s say I have have a car registered to me. Can my insurance policy have coverage for an additional driver who is in my household as well, but due to having a different residence as well in a different state, that driver has the other state’s driver’s license?

Also, can the car be actually registered to these 2 people? I know i’ve only seen a car being registered to one person. But maybe it’s possible too?
