Last week I canceled my group health insurance through my employer. I still have a deduction on my pay check for the premium. Why should I pay the premium until Feb. 1st? I am covered now by my wife’s group plan.

I’m setting up a “virtual” business online. I have decided that the LLC would be a simpler way to incorporate than the S-Corp. For the type of work I’m doing, I cannot be a sole proprietor. What I want to be sure of is that the LLC would allow me to get group health insurance, having only myself as an employee.

My 19 year old daughter, my only dependent, has been covered by my group health insurance policy all her life. She got pregnant last year and was unmarried. She carried the baby until the sixth month and lost it due to chromosomal abnormalities. That pregnancy was covered by my group insurance. She is now pregnant for a second time but has just informed me that she got married in February 2006. When I contacted my benefits office, I was told that I had missed the deadline for requesting a conversion policy for temporary coverage for my daughter and that there were no exceptions. This seems so harsh since she now has no coverage for this pregnancy. I am willing to pay the increased premiums back to the date of her marriage. I have continued to pay my family premiums and am not asking for a reimbursement. Do I have any rights under the federal law that requires a employer to allow a dependant to convert to an individual policy? Jan

We’re getting group insurance for a small business for the first time. One of the employees is concerned about getting coverage for infertility treatments, specifically In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Only 15 states mandate that health insurance providers must offer coverage for infertility.

The company is based in New York, but the employee lives in Florida. The state-mandated health coverage is very different for these states. I need to know if the state-mandated benefits are dependent on the state of employee residence or the state of the originating policy (where the company is located).

Also, some states mandate much better coverage for these treatments (like Massachusetts). Can the company purchase a group health insurance plan through Massachusetts and pass those benefits on to their employees?

    Thanks!

I asked this question earlier but some people can’t seem to understand that I purchase health insurance privately for myself and my son. Before I get to the question let me be clear… I do not have health insurance available through my job. My question is about continuing to carry my son on my current private policy or am I required to drop him. What follows is my question just as I have posted it before:

I have carried my son on my private health insurance for many years. He has decided to take some time off from school and work a while. He started working a full time job about 6 weeks ago and will be eligible to get health insurance through his job after 90 days.

What are the guidelines for this situation? I worry that after a few months he’ll decide he’s made a bad choice and will want to quit this job and go on to school like I had hoped. In the meantime he’s determined that he wants to work for a year or 2 and figure out what he wants to do with his life.

I don’t know if he can just stay on my policy and not join the group health insurance at his job or not. Can you give me some guidance on this if you are familiar with the laws/rules regarding such a situation.

Any thoughtful advice is much appreciated!
